Tokyo selected to host 2025 World Athletics Championships
On July 14th, 2022, the World Athletics Council has made a decision on the venue of the 2025 World Athletics Championships, and Tokyo has been awarded as its host.
The City has hosted the World Athletics Championships (then-IAAF World Championships in Athletics) back in 1991, and it will return to the National Olympic Stadium in 34 years. Japan has been given an honor to host the World Championships for the 3rd time, 18 years after the second being in Osaka 2007.
2025 marks the 20th edition of the World Championships, and Japan will be the first country to host for 3 times. Tokyo lines up as a city to host the Championships twice with Helsinki, Finland hosting in 1983 and 2005.
For the bidding process, Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF), Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and the Japanese Government have been working closely together with a strong voice of support from our relevant stakeholders and athletics fans. We take this opportunity to thank all the people who have given us their endorsements. This is the start of our exciting journey, and we will be working closely together with World Athletics to confirm the details of the event, including the competition dates, for the most successful organization.
Japan has sent a team of 68 athletes to Oregon, the biggest number to the World Championships overseas, and as the future host of the World Championships, we wish the World Athletics and the LOC the greatest success of the event.
Message from Mr. Mitsugi Ogata, President of JAAF:
“We are immensely proud that World Athletics has demonstrated their confidence and trust in Japan to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
Together with World Athletics as One Team, we will capitalize on this opportunity to showcase the best possible global event for growing our sports to a higher level.
History has shown that we have the ability and energy to host the world’s top athletes and to inspire international audiences. We promise that the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will be full of fans to become an unforgettable experience for the athletes and everyone involved.”
