Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games - Team Japan achieves the highest number of Top 8 athletes for the postwar Olympic Games

After one year postponement to 2021, the athletics events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was organized from July 30th to August 8th at the National Stadium (Olympic Stadium) and at Sapporo City, Hokkaido for the road events.

For the 20km Race Walking Men held in Sapporo, 3 promising walkers namely Toshikazu Yamanishi (Aichi Steel), Gold Medalist from the 2019 World Athletics Championships Doha, Koki Ikeda (Asahi Kasei) and Eiki Takahashi (Fujitsu) represented Japan. The race was conducted in an extreme hot weather, but the athletes showed an excellent performance, with Ikeda clinching a Silver Medal and Yamanishi winning a Bronze. It was the first moment to see our Japanese athletes getting medals at our home soil.

In addition to the 2 medals from the 20km Race Walking Men, Japan had 7 athletes placing within the Top 8. So, the total number of athletes who became the Top 8 was 9 which is the highest number for the postwar period (after 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games).

On top of this, we had finalists and many athletes who made national records or personal records. Team Japan was able to show a significant presence and strength at their home Olympic Games.
